Happy Somaliland Independence Day : Today on June 26th 1960, Somaliland became an Independent Nation in Africa

A Royal proclamation of Queen Elizabeth II granted independence to the British Somaliland Protectorate at midnight 25th June, 1960 – and State of Somaliland came into being on 26June.

Today on June 26th 1960, Somaliland become An Independent African Nation for the first time in the History of Africa.

British Somaliland Protectorate was under the British Monarchy for nearly 80 years. Somaliland a small nation in the Horn of Africa was located in a strategic location and sought the protection of United Kingdom of Britain.

Somaliland is a conservative pastoral nation and enjoyed similar values to those of Great Britain which helped Somaliland British Protectorate flourish as Somalilanders are known as natural entrepreneurs or skilled traders during the British Protectorate time.

Somalilanders love education and Educational Institutions like Amoud and Secondary Sheikh School were established to help Somaliland's young generation get access to British education. Secondary Sheikh School is nicknamed as Eton College of Somaliland according to the Guardian.

On this day Somaliland a new African nation enjoyed their Independence recognised by more than 35 countries.

Somalilanders wherever they are treasure this day as it marks their First Independence in the Horn of Africa. One could say a new Sunshine rose in the Horn of Africa.

1958: Secondary Sheikh School of Somaliland visited by Royals from Great Britain

It was in Somaliland that they were presented with the cheetahs 26 November 1958

UK: GLOUCESTERS RETURN FROM AFRICA WITH TWO CAGED CHEETAHS. 26 November 1958

Story Queen Elizabeth’s uncle, the Duke of Gloucester was filmed landing at London Airport November 26 on his return from Africa. With him was the Duchess and stowed in a cage two baby cheetahs presented during their tour.

The Gloucesters’ tour took them to Ethiopia, Somaliland and Aden. It was in Somaliland that they were presented with the cheetahs at an open-air durbar November 22.

Tribal leaders brought the gifts – a traditional gesture of homage – to the Duke. They included two camels, four sheep and a horse. The Duke gave the camels and some sacks of rice to feed poor people in the district and the sheep were presented to a local children’s home. He will keep the horse and will probably present the cheetahs to a zoo in Britain.
