UK: GLOUCESTERS RETURN FROM AFRICA WITH TWO CAGED CHEETAHS. 26 November 1958
Story Queen Elizabeth’s uncle, the Duke of Gloucester was filmed landing at London Airport November 26 on his return from Africa. With him was the Duchess and stowed in a cage two baby cheetahs presented during their tour. The Gloucesters’ tour took them to Ethiopia, Somaliland and Aden. It was in Somaliland that they were presented with the cheetahs at an open-air durbar November 22.
Tribal leaders brought the gifts – a traditional gesture of homage – to the Duke. They included two camels, four sheep and a horse. The Duke gave the camels and some sacks of rice to feed poor people in the district and the sheep were presented to a local children’s home. He will keep the horse and will probably present the cheetahs to a zoo in Britain.
